“Can’t you check if there’s a warrant out for someone named Josh who’s also twenty-eight?” she asked. Detective Perrenoud promised she would check and, in the meantime, would put the house where Josh lived under surveillance.

That evening, officers staking out the house at 6902 Cutty Sark Street saw a man who appeared to fit the height and weight of the individual in the ATM footage and the footage from the Sky Chef parking lot. They tailed his car and followed him to a local gym, the Alaska Club, on Northern Lights Boulevard. Officers took surveillance photos as he entered the gym and later, as he left, they stopped him, and discovered his name was Joshua Greene. The eighteen-year-old was wanted on a warrant for underage drinking, and so officers placed him under arrest.

Thinking this was the man to whom Kathy had referred, Detective Perrenoud immediately called Kathy and asked her to stop by the police station after work to look at some photos.

“That’s not the right Josh,” Kathy said with certainty, looking at both the surveillance photos and a booking photo. She said the Josh who lived next door looked older and had longer hair which was more spiked on top. It turned out Joshua Greene was a friend of Shane Phillips who did not live at the house, and had just come by for a visit. To add to the confusion, Shane’s stepfather, Josh Hershleb, had been around to check on his stepson in recent days but was also not the Josh to whom Kathy had alluded.

Detective Perrenoud then showed Kathy a number of booking photos of other men, none of whom she recognized.
